New Food Allergen Labelling Regulations

Wednesday, 18 March 2015

Food businesses and the public are reminded of new rules that came into force in December 2014 that affect the way that food allergen information is provided.

The Isle of Man Food Information Regulations 2014 enable consumers to make informed choices about food when shopping and eating out.

The new rules mean that all food businesses will need to inform consumers if any of fourteen specified allergenic ingredients are present in the food they make or serve.

Cafes, restaurants and businesses selling loose food can let their customers know about the allergen information in a number of ways including: by presenting written information on menus, by explaining verbally or by directing customers to where or how allergen information can be obtained.  If foods are pre-packed, the allergens must be emphasised in the ingredients list.

Richard Ronan MHK, Minister for Environment Food and Agriculture said:

'This legislation is good news for the public, as the changes will make sure that allergen information is consistently and clearly available, which helps customers to make safer food choices.

'Food businesses will also benefit.  As a consequence of having better allergen information, customers who are affected by allergies will have the confidence to purchase food products.'

Food allergies affect approximately 5–8% of children and 1–2% of adults. This means that around 2 million people in the UK are living with a food allergy. The primary cause of food allergy deaths in the UK is due to allergic reactions when food is eaten outside the home, where ingredients have not been made clear.

People with food allergies can react to very small amounts of food, such as a teaspoon of yoghurt, a single peanut or even an egg glaze used to brush over pies. The only way that people can control allergies is to avoid the allergen.
