The Isle of Man Government, through its International Development Committee (IDC) has agreed to give charities a total of £50,000 to help victims of conflict in Burundi and South Sudan.
Action Aid has been granted £25,000 to support refugees from Burundi who have fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The ongoing constitutional crisis in Burundi, where there is violent conflict between government supporters and the opposition, has resulted in thousands of people seeking refuge in neighbouring countries such as the DRC.
Action Aid projects aim to provide food and nutrition, access to safe water and sanitation, and hygiene items. The charity is also providing for the specific needs of women and children who have suffered various forms of violence by increasing access to protection services.
South Sudan continues to be besieged by conflict. Medair UK has received funding of £25,000 to help coordinate a response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Medair UK aims to set up water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, temporary healthcare facilities for nutrition, and distribute essential items such as emergency shelters. This response is crucial in protecting the vulnerable from exploitation by those known to be monopolising access to the limited clean water supply.
Minister Phil Gawne MHK, Chair of the IDC commented:
'With these donations to support projects by Action Aid and Medair UK, the Isle of Man is helping to provide vital assistance to a large number of vulnerable displaced people in areas overwhelmed by conflict.'
