Fundamental Festival

A pilot project to introduce the very youngest primary school pupils to fitness proved a success.

Manx Sport and Recreation (MSR) hosted the first Fundamental Festival for five to seven-year-olds today (Tuesday) at the NSC.

Mikey Haslett, Community Sports Development Officer, said MSR offers plenty for older primary pupils via its Primary Schools' Sports Programme but fewer opportunities for Key Stage 1.

'Fundamental events – based around the core skills of agility, balance and co-ordination – form the foundations of involvement in sport and physical activity,' Mikey said.

'Our primary schools' programme creates positive early experiences of sport and the introduction of the Fundamental Festival, at Key Stage 1, creates an additional stepping stone for children to a lifelong involvement in physical activity.

'Our pilot event, delivered by staff, community coaches and volunteers, gave children an introduction to sport in a friendly, fun and non-results based environment, with the emphasis on them enjoying activities and interacting with children from other schools,'

Mikey said.

'Fifty children took part today and we hope to make it a fully-fledged event and a firm part of our programme from next year.'
