Dog owners are asked to exercise caution when letting their animals off the lead on or near farmland.
Police are investigating an attack by a dog on a sheep in Colby yesterday (Thursday). The ram’s injuries were so severe it had to be destroyed.
Stuart Jaques, Chief Veterinary Officer with the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture, said:
‘In recent years we have experienced some serious and well-publicised incidents of sheep worrying.
‘Sadly, this latest attack has resulted in the death of a ram. While the farmer concerned found the animal alive and called a veterinary surgeon, the extent of the injuries were such that euthanasia was the only option.’
Mr Jaques said:
‘It is important to remember that any dog, regardless of breed, size, or temperament, is capable of causing serious injury or death to any sheep, especially pregnant ewes and ewes with lambs. Footpaths obviously bring walkers and dogs in close proximity to sheep and owners are advised to keep their dogs under control at all times.’
Owners should be aware that farmers have the right to take action to protect their livestock in the event of dogs straying, Mr Jaques added.
Legal action can also be taken against people who do not control their dogs, with severe penalties available together with claims for compensation.
