Food Safety Unit supports Solgar UK product recall

Thursday, 27 November 2014

The Food Safety Unit of the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture supports a product recall by Solgar UK of ‘ABC Dophilus powder’, a dietary supplement which has been found to contain a fungus – Rhizopus oryzae.

This product is marketed as a blend of friendly bacteria specially formulated as a dietary supplement for infants and children, which mixes instantly with infant formula, milk, juice or water, or can be sprinkled on food.

Ivan Bratty Food Safety Manager said:

'If you have purchased this product to supplement your child’s diet, our advice is to check the packaging, if the packaging has a ‘best before end date’ of July 2015, do not feed or consume the powder.  Please return it to the retailer where you purchased it for a full refund.

'This advice is in line with that of the company and the UK Food Standards Agency.  All other Solgar UK products and other batches of ‘ABC Dophilus powder’ are not known to be affected.'

The Rhizopus oryzae fungus may cause a rare infection known as mucormycosis, which can cause health problems to those in vulnerable groups such as premature infants, infants, children and anyone with a weakened immune system.  If you have any concerns about the wellbeing of you or your family having consumed this product, please contact your GP in the first instance.
