Youth Service offers half term sound and lighting course

Monday, 27 January 2014

Sound and lighting are exciting parts of performing arts and the Department of Education and Children’s Youth Service is offering young people the chance to take control with a live event technology course.

During February half-term at the Youth Arts Centre in Kensington Road, the course will give young people insight into setting up and operating sound and lighting equipment for events. The group will see behind the scenes at a couple of venues across the Island as part of the course.

During the week-long course, learners will build a portfolio which, upon successful completion, leads to an Open Awards certification in ‘Sound and Lighting Technician’ at level one.

Martin Macfarlane, Open Awards tutor, said:

‘This is an amazing opportunity for young people to gain a qualification in a specialist area that is otherwise unavailable locally. One great benefit of the Open Awards is the flexibility we have to adapt for the particular needs of our learners.

‘Over the years, graduates have assisted with many community-based events all over the Island and some have taken their newly found skills a step-further by continuing their development at University,’

said Martin.

‘This is a great method of getting young people actively involved with performing arts in a challenging, yet rewarding, position. Young people grow in confidence while developing life skills in areas such as timekeeping, teamwork and responsibility.’

Martin and fellow Open Awards tutor Paul Ellison will lead the course. Learners must be able to attend workshops during February half-term between 10am-4pm and be in school year 8+. Should you be allocated a place, it will cost £65. For further information or to register, contact the Youth Office on +44 1624 686057 or email m.macfarlane@doe.sch.im
