Department of Health signs Memorandum of Understanding with General Osteopathic Council

Thursday, 13 February 2014

Following the successful second reading of the Health Care Professionals Bill at Tuesday’s sitting of the House of Keys and ahead of the progress through the branches of Tynwald, the Department of Health earlier this week agreed an interim Memorandum of Understanding with the United Kingdom’s General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).

If the Bill becomes law, the Department will rely on the GOsC to help it with regulating Osteopaths in the Isle of Man and the Council will in turn be looking to the Department to keep it appraised of any issues which might arise involving Osteopaths on the Island.

Under the Bill, Osteopaths working on the Island will be required to be registered with the GoSC in order to practise here.

During a visit to the Island earlier this week Mr Tim Walker, Chief Executive and Registrar of the GOsC had a very successful meeting with a group of local Osteopaths and Department officials to discuss the implications of the forthcoming Bill, and after the meeting Mr Walker said:

'On behalf of the General Osteopathic Council I am pleased to be able to sign this interim Memorandum of Understanding and look forward to the Health Care Professionals Bill, which the GOsC fully supports, coming into effect later this year. I look forward to developing and maintaining an effective partnership between the Council and the Department of Health in the Isle of Man which will help to both protect members of the public from practitioners who may be operating on the Island without being properly regulated and to support those practitioners on the Island who are fully registered with the Council.'

Minister for Health, David Anderson MHK, upon signing the memorandum said:

'I am pleased to sign this interim Memorandum of Understanding with the GOsC. It’s important that we continue to build and strengthen relationship with professional and regulatory bodies in the UK, upon which we rely for the registration of numerous healthcare professionals.'
