Launch of the Adult Services - Learning Disability Strategy

Monday, 10 February 2014

Last year, the Department of Social Care launched a consultation on the second 5 year Learning Disability Strategy 2014 - 2019. This built on the previous strategy and set out the Department’s view of how people with a learning disability should be included and supported in the community in which they live. The Department received a small number of responses and suggestions with regard to the Strategy, which it has considered and in the main included in the redrafting.

The Department would like to thank everybody who participated in the consultation and in doing so acknowledge the contribution that has been made toward setting the agenda for the development of services for the next 5 years.

The Strategy which has now been launched will lay the foundation for the commissioning of outcome based services for many years ahead and in doing so, will also signal a change in current policy for the Department of Social Care in proposing the reorganisation of services to provide more personalised care and support. The Strategy can be found by following the links on the Isle of Man Government website to the pages of the Department of Social Care, Adult Services.

Minister of Social Care Hon Chris Robertshaw MHK said:

'Understanding the needs of the vulnerable of the Isle of Man is fundamental to the work of the Department of Social Care in both the commissioning and delivering of outcome based services. This five year Learning Disability Strategy examines the current change in need and demand for services on the Island and outlines the key priorities for the Department in delivering service to Adults with a Learning Disability.'

The Strategy will be underpinned by a Service Delivery Plan that will ensure we deliver on the promises we make and measure the real outcomes for the people the Department supports. This was the first time that we have consulted on a five year strategy and in doing so we have provided an opportunity for the wider community to comment on the future direction and provision of services for adults with a learning disability.
