The fashion world’s latest hotspot is Scoill Vallajeelt, where pupils today showed off their bespoke spring 2014 collection to the media.

The children have, since the autumn term, worked with former Burberry designer Calum Harvey, who has taught them about the history of fashion and the skills that go into making clothes.

Last week, Calum oversaw the children going into full production with their clothing range, which is now on display in the front entrance of the school.

Calum explained that the children had brought back to life used and unwanted clothing, material and accessories.

‘Through up-cycling and customising the material, the children had an opportunity to try techniques like dyeing, printing, weaving, cutting and making garments,’

he said.

‘After meeting the School Council, inspiration from the 1960s was the starting point for our research and design work.

‘Pupils from different year groups have all taken part in making their mark on the pieces that will be on display at the school during Island of Culture 2014.’

Calum said:

‘It's been a pleasure to work with Vallajeelt’s pupils, who have shown initiative, creativity and enthusiasm. I would like to thank the staff and pupils for being so welcoming and passionate throughout the project.’

Adrian Shorthouse, Headteacher of Scoill Vallajeelt, said the project was one of many the school is undertaking for Island of Culture 2014.

He said:

‘It is important that we as a school take advantage of the skills and time experts like Calum have to guide and enthuse our pupils and give them experiences they might not otherwise have.’
