Big response to consultation on new drivers

Tuesday, 16 December 2014

The Department of Infrastructure has received more than 1,200 responses to its public consultation on new drivers.

Feedback was invited on a number of proposals aimed at improving the safety of inexperienced motorists. These included raising the driving test age to 17 years and extending the use of ‘R’ plates.

The Department will assess the comments and produce a summary of responses to the consultation before deciding whether to implement any of the proposals.

A wide range of ideas was suggested by the public, such as the introduction of curfews, limits on the number of passengers that can be carried, enhanced training opportunities and restrictions on engine sizes or power of vehicles. Other respondents called for better enforcement of the existing legislation, rather than the creation of new measures.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne MHK said:

‘I’d like to thank all those who responded to the online survey or provided written submissions to the consultation. The high level of engagement shows how important this subject is to Manx people.’

He added:

‘Despite the progress that has been made in reducing the number of fatal collisions, there are still concerns about the safety of inexperienced drivers. Statistics show that a disproportionate number in the 16 to 24 age group are involved in serious incidents. The Isle of Man has witnessed too many tragedies involving young drivers and passengers in recent times and the Department is committed to exploring ways of reducing the risks.

‘The consultation feedback will be reviewed and used to help shape our future policy and legislation. We want to strike the right balance between making things safer and not unduly restricting young people’s social freedoms and economic opportunities.’
