Take simple steps to good food hygiene

Friday, 12 December 2014

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture is reminding people to take simple steps to avoid food poisoning this festive season.

Good food hygiene is particularly important at this time of year when cooking for more people, and in greater quantities, than usual.  Poor food hygiene could leave people suffering from food poisoning with unpleasant symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach cramps.

Following a few simple steps can dramatically reduce the chance of food poisoning:

  • Do not wash raw poultry or meat because harmful bacteria can easily splash onto worktops, chopping boards, dishes and utensils;
  • Wash your hands before and after handling turkey, poultry, or any other raw meat;
  • Make sure food is defrosted thoroughly in a fridge or cool place;
  • Keep raw poultry and meat separate from cooked or prepared food;
  • Ensure meat is cooked right through until the internal juices run clear;
  • Cook stuffing separately to reduce the risk of both the meat and stuffing being under cooked;
  • Cool left-overs quickly before refrigerating, use them within two days and only reheat them once, making sure the food is piping hot.

Ivan Bratty, Food Safety Manager, said:

'Following these simple steps can reduce the risk of food poisoning, ensuring that your family and friends have a happy and healthy Christmas, with all the enjoyment of great food

'If you think that you have food poisoning, contact your GP practice by telephone for advice.  Do not visit your GP surgery, MEDS, Minor Illness and Injuries Unit (MIIU) at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital or A&E at Noble’s Hospital while you are ill unless advised to do so by a medical professional.'
