The Isle of Man Medical Research Committee is a charity set up to encourage medical education and to promote medical research. The charity has supported the Schools Information Day for over five years as an annual event to encourage students to think about the different aspects of a career as a healthcare professional.
Member for Health, Dudley Butt MLC, said:
'The aim of this event is to encourage of the Island’s students who have expressed some sort of initial interest in a career in medicine to learn more about the career choices open to them and give them an insight, through speaking to medics, into what these professions really entail. The Department of Health is delighted to support, with the help of the Isle of Man Medical Research Committee, the academic and professional choices of these Year 12 students. May they go on to excel in their chosen professional medical field.'
The day was a mixture of informative seminars and a practical session. The morning was given over to a practical session on effective resuscitation in the Clinical Skills Lab – part of the Keyll Darree learning facilities situated in Noble’s Hospital grounds. During the afternoon there was a talk on UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) applications was given by Dr Robert Skaife, Problem Based Learning Director at the School of Medicine, University of Liverpool. The students received information on how to obtain work experience at Noble’s Hospital and on the avenues of support available for learning in this field and for choosing healthcare professional careers.

Manx students leaving the Island each September to take up university courses in medicine, dentistry or pharmacy can apply receive a grant from the Isle of Man Medical Research Committee. The one-off grant has significant monetary value to assist in the purchase of text books and other expenses at the beginning of the student’s university course. Students accepted on these courses, and who wish to apply for a grant should contact Dr Alison Blackman by email: alison.blackman@gov.im.
