Physical Activity for All with GoDoActive launch

Tuesday, 29 October 2013

Members of the Physical Activity Strategy Implementation Group are pleased to announce the launch of the GoDoActive initiative. Through collaborative partnerships across Government, local authorities, the private sector and the Third Sector, this initiative aims to increase the profile of physical activity and support active living on the Isle of Man. The launch will take place at 10:00am on Tuesday 29 October 2013, in the café area at the National Sports Centre.

The GoDoActive website will be launched at this event – this website is a one-stop shop for information on activities taking place on the Island, gives guidelines on the daily/weekly amounts of exercise for all age groups and describes the physical and psychological benefits of regular exercise.

During the launch week we will be highlighting some of the activity sessions that take place on a regular basis; for example – mountain biking on South Barrule, chair-based exercise sessions at various locations around the Island, multi-sports fun sessions at the NSC, and Out2Play activities run by the Children’s Centre – to name but a few.

Strategy Coordinator, Dawn Henley, said:

'There are so many opportunities to participate in physical activity; the Island has some great opportunities for outdoor and indoor recreation. The GoDoActive brand promotes the health benefits of physical activity and brings together information about the opportunities available, in one easy-to-use website – just click on an age group and you will find the available activities. It is envisaged that the branding will be used by organisations wanting to promote physical activity to improve health and well-being.'

Chair of the Sports and Healthy Schools Partnership, Dudley Butt MLC, said,

'I’m fully supportive of the GoDoActive initiative. This initiative has highlighted many physical activity opportunities available on the Island. Regular physical activity is an important factor in staying healthy, and the secret to maintaining regular participation in physical activity is doing something you enjoy and can fit into your life. This initiative offers the population many different choices for becoming more active, such as making the most of our beautiful countryside for walking, cycling and active play, or attending both indoor and outdoor structured activities.'
