Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital achieves the gold standard with Investors in People accreditation

Monday, 21 October 2013

Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital staff have today celebrated their superb achievement in being awarded the Gold standard of the Investors in People (IIP) earlier this year. Member for the Department of Economic Development Mr Laurence Skelly MHK was invited to present the staff with the official certificate and plaque to celebrate.

Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital first gained IIP status in 2005, and this presentation follows the hospital’s fourth external review by an IIP specialist. The Gold accreditation confirms the hospital’s unique ability to strategically manage its activities, fulfil its objectives and effectively lead, develop and motivate staff. Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital joins the top 2% of organisations across the UK which have achieved the gold standard.

IIP is co-ordinated in the Isle of Man by the Department of Economic Development. The scheme is utilised by many organisations across the Isle of Man, the UK and globally, in both the public and private sectors. IIP aims to help organisations improve their performance by developing and harnessing the skills of the people within the organisation.

Member for Department of Economic Development, Mr Laurence Skelly MHK, said:

'It’s exceptional to see so many areas of Government now achieving, maintaining and exceeding the IIP standard. I would encourage all areas of Government and the private sector to accept the IIP challenge, as the staff of Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital have done to their credit. IIP is an important customer and staff centred framework applicable across all sectors; in the public sector it is enabling Government services, such as those at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital, to be delivered by motivated and engaged staff.

'The hospital’s recent accreditation report showed a real benefit in terms of the quality of service and care, to both patients and the wider community. I extend my sincere congratulations to the team at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital on their gold achievement, well done.'

Gold IIP standard is only given to organisations who can demonstrate excellence in developing and supporting their staff and clients. The IIP specialist who visited confirmed in their report that the hospital had met 175 evidence standards, in excess of the 165 required. These included 23 areas of strength, notably effective leadership and communication; patient focussed care; trust between management and staff and between staff and patients; empowerment, motivation, positive working relations and development of team members and a commitment to sustainability.

Minister for Health David Anderson MHK, said:

'I’m delighted that the hard work and dedication of our team at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital has been recognised through such an excellent accreditation report and the achievement of the gold standard. The demonstration of so many exacting standards such as, open communication and shared leadership, investment in development of both staff, and strategies and focus on long term sustainability were some of the areas identified where the hospital had particular strength. Very well done indeed to everyone at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital for achieving such a superb result which continues to show that staff are putting the patients at the heart of everything the hospital does.'

Ginette Hattersley, Hospital Manager said:

'IIP is an on-going framework which has become part of the fabric of the hospital and how we work. The report shows an exceptionally high score, well over the target level. We are pleased and proud of this significant achievement and of our staff for all their efforts, accomplishments and team working throughout the hospital.'

Cath Quilliam, Head of Community Health Services said:

'This is an absolutely fantastic achievement. Congratulations to the whole workforce as they have all contributed to this gold accreditation.'
