Chief Minister looking forward to lively public debate in Peel

Thursday, 17 October 2013

Residents in the west of the Island will have an opportunity to question Government Ministers on issues of national importance at a community meeting next week.

The Council of Ministers is continuing its programme of public engagement with an event at the Peel Centenary Centre on Tuesday 22 October, starting at 7.30pm.

Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK will once again chair proceedings and says he is looking forward to another lively exchange of views.

This is the sixth in the series of regional meetings since the initiative was introduced by the Chief Minister in March last year. It will follow a similar format to previous events, with a short presentation taking place before the floor is opened up for a question and answer session.

Mr Bell said:

‘The community meeting at the Peel Centenary Centre is now less than a week away and I expect there will be some robust discussions on a range of issues. These events are a key part of my promise to promote open and transparent Government and to work with the public in the best interests of the Isle of Man. They are extremely valuable in terms of communicating directly with local people and we take on board the ideas, comments and concerns that are voiced.’

As well as using the roving microphones to ask a question during the open Q&A session, members of the audience will have the option of putting a written question to Ministers. Forms will be available which can be completed and placed in a box at the side of the main stage.

The meeting in Peel will start at 7.30pm on Tuesday 22 October, with doors open from 7pm. The event is free and open to all members of the public.

There is a limit on the number of people the venue can accommodate and seats will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. No bookings will be taken.

People who are unable to attend can get a flavour of proceedings via the Chief Minister’s Office Twitter feed @IOMGovernment, following the hashtag #peelcomin
