Isle of Man is Instagram hit

Friday, 15 November 2013

Three of the world’s most prolific Instagrammers have visited the Isle of Man to capture and share the Island’s beautiful and varied scenery on the highly popular social network, Instagram.

Instagram is the online photo-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos with their mobile phones, reformat them to a specific style and share with other users.

Jiri Siftar, Finn Beales and Dan Rubin have over one million followers between them. They visited all corners of the Island during their stay, posting a combined total of 45 images, which generated 7,600,000 impressions and received 206,400 ‘likes’ on Instagram for #isleofman, 1100% and 546% respectively up on the previous month’s figures.

Laurence Skelly MHK, Political Member with responsibility for Tourism commented:

‘We’re always looking to be as innovative as possible in how we promote the Isle of Man to help increase both visitor numbers and spend.  Given the varied scenic beauty that we have here a picture is indeed worth a thousand words. Having explored a number of different options, Instagram seemed like the perfect platform on which to highlight the Island visually.

‘The Department’s Visitor Economy Strategy acknowledges that Tourism has a key role to play in communicating strong positive messages in the worldwide market place about the Island and its assets in a way that is consistent and complementary to our other sectors.

‘We are fully engaged with social media and already operate very successful Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Flickr pages as well as Instagram.

‘With one million followers between them, Jiri, Finn and Dan are Instagram royalty and working with them to showcase different aspects of the Island’s landscape has been really successful. They shot some fantastic pictures which have been seen by millions around the world.

‘It was incredible to see the level of engagement when the photos were posted, with people liking and sharing the pictures almost instantly.’

Instagram also enables users to share images across other social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. The site has grown rapidly over the last few years and now has over 130 million users, posting around 1 billion pictures a day.

Instagrammer Jiri Siftar has over 200,000 followers. He said:

‘This was my was my first time visiting the Isle of Man and I was seriously blown away by the landscape - from the rugged coastline offering views of impressive sunsets, through to the towns and fishing villages, all with heaps of personality. It’s a small island, but it packs in the best of the British Isles and is an awesome place to photograph.’

Those that would like to see all of the images can view them on the Visit Isle of Man Facebook page in the ‘Albums’ section.
