Celebration of more housing completions in Ballasalla

Monday, 13 May 2013

The Department of Social Care, residents and invited guests celebrated the completion of the latest phase of redevelopment today (Friday) at Clagh Vane in Ballasalla by the unveiling of a memorial plaque by Department member Richard Ronan MHK and inspecting some of the 33 new apartments and bungalows in Cooyrt Drine and Cooyrt Shellagh.

Mr. Ronan said:

'I am pleased to have the opportunity to see examples of the current good standard of public sector rented housing being developed to meet the needs of those on the public sector housing waiting list, and to help celebrate another milestone in bringing all the properties on the Clagh Vane estate to modern standards. In addition I would like to thank all parties involved in the project for their teamwork in bringing it to a successful completion.'

The event was attended by representatives of the project team which designed and undertook the works, including Principal Contractor Tooms Bros., and Architect John Payne from the Department of Infrastructure Office of Architecture.

In addition, local MHK Hon. Graham Cregeen and representatives from Malew Commissioners were in attendance along with tenants from the new properties and elsewhere on the Clagh Vane Estate.

The 33 new properties have replaced 26 post war properties originally on the site. The Department recently held an exhibition for residents of the estate to seek feedback on plans to renew the 42 remaining properties on the estate in need of major works which will be progressed over the next 5 years.

The project also includes a communal boiler plant which is principally powered by woodchip fuel (referred to as biomass) which is a product supplied by the Department of the Environment, Food and Agriculture from the St. Johns Saw Mills. Biomass is considered as one of the best renewable green fuels and should result in increasingly competitive heating costs for residents.
