New Proof of Age cards from July

Tuesday, 11 June 2013

New Proof of Age cards will be available from the Welcome Centre in Douglas Sea Terminal from Monday 1 July 2013, providing Tynwald approves the Licensing (Evidence of Age) (Amendment) Regulations 2013 at this month’s sitting.

The cards enable people aged 18 and over to prove their age when required prior to purchasing age restricted goods such as alcohol, videos and fireworks.

Application forms to obtain the new Proof of Age card can now be downloaded from the website or collected from the Welcome Centre.

Administration of the scheme is being managed by the Customer First team of the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure.

Mary Gaffney, Customer Services Manager, explained:

‘The purpose of the card is to assist retailers and licensees in the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products, alcohol, fireworks, solvents, videos and petrol which are all controlled by laws restricting the age at which hey can be bought. The Proof of Age card helps them comply with the law and also allows anyone of 18 years or more to buy the goods they want hassle free.’

Completed application forms can be taken in person to the Welcome Centre with the necessary supporting documentation which is identified on the application form. There is a £10 charge per card to cover production and processing costs.

Cards will be issued by the Welcome Centre between 9am and 5pm Monday to Saturday from Monday 1 July 2013. All Proof of Age cards, including those previously issued by the Office of Fair Trading, remain valid for five years.
