Launch of the Adult Services - Learning Disability Strategy Consultation

Monday, 29 July 2013

As part of the broader Department of Social Care (DSC) Adult Services Rebalancing Programme, the DSC is launching a consultation to invite comments on the second 5 year Learning Disability Strategy 2013 - 2018.

This second Five Year Strategy builds on the previous strategy and sets out how people with a learning disability should be included and supported in the community in which they live. Adults with learning disabilities will also have information about services to support their needs, so that they can participate in decision-making relative to their own lives. People will also be able to use local services, wherever possible, and specialist services when they need them. They will have greater opportunities to get a paid job and develop as individuals.

The strategy will set out our developments for the next 5 years and lay the foundation for the commissioning of outcome based services for many years ahead.

The Strategy will also signal a change in current policy for the Department of Social Care in proposing the reorganisation of services to provide more personalised care and support.

Minister of Social Care Hon Chris Robertshaw MHK said:

'Understanding the needs of the vulnerable of the Isle of Man is fundamental to the work of the Department of Social Care in both the commissioning and delivering of outcome based services. This five year Learning Disability Strategy examines the current change in need and demand for services on the Island and outlines the key priorities for the Department in delivering service to Adults with a Learning Disability. The Strategy will be underpinned by a detailed Service Delivery Plan that will ensure we deliver on the promises we make and measure the real outcomes for the people the Department supports. This is first time that we have consulted on a five year strategy and in doing so it will provide an opportunity for the wider community to comment on the future direction and provision of services for adults with a learning disability.'

The public consultation will run for six weeks ending at 5pm on Friday 6th September 2013. More information on the proposed changes is available:
