Export Control (Burma Sanctions) Order 2013 (Application) Order 2013

Thursday, 22 August 2013

The Treasury advises that the above Order has been made and takes effect in the Island on 28 August 2013.

The purpose of the Order is to provide for the enforcement in the Island of the trade sanctions against Burma/Myanmar which remain in place following the repeal and replacement of Council Regulation (EC) No 194/2008 by Council Regulation (EU) No 401/2013.

The new Regulation retains a restriction imposed in respect of Burma/Myanmar in relation to the sale, supply, export or transfer of equipment that might be used for internal repression, as well as prohibitions on the provision of technical assistance in relation to military activities and equipment that might be used for internal repression.

An arms embargo continues.

Breach of the continuing prohibitions and restrictions would constitute offences under either the Order or the Customs and Excise Management Act 1986, and render a person convicted of such offences liable to a fine, imprisonment or both.

More information on sanctions affecting Burma/Myanmar may be found on the Customs and Excise website or may be obtained from the Sanctions Officer.
