Beware of Phone Calls regarding Boiler Maintenance Contracts

A potential scam has been brought to the attention of the OFT. It involves individuals being contacted by telephone and being advised that that the contract relating to their boiler maintenance has run out. The caller goes on to say that the maintenance contract can be renewed very quickly and easily, but will require bank details in order to do this.

Mike Ball, Chief Officer of the OFT said:

"We had a spate of similar phone calls reported to the OFT around 2 years ago. If you receive a call like this, we would advise the following:-
If you are concerned about the call, put the phone down immediately. Don’t become trapped in a discussion with the caller – make sure you control the conversation so you are not manipulated into agreeing to something.
NEVER give any bank details over the phone.
Check any existing contracts you may have. Has the cover run out? Speak to the company which normally services your boiler to clarify. If you are unsure, contact the company directly on a known number which can be found in the telephone directory or via directory enquiries.
If you wish to speak to someone about a call you have received, you can contact one of our consumer advisers on 686500."

Remember, you can reduce the number of telesales calls you receive by registering with the Telephone Preference Service at www.tpsonline.org.uk or by calling 0845 070 0707.
