Why would you check with the Gas Safe Register?

What do you know about the Gas Safe Register? This is the question the Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading and the Department of Local Government and the Environment are asking consumers.

The Gas Safe Register – which replaced CORGI - is the official body for gas safety in Great Britain and the Isle of Man. This means that whenever a gas engineer carries out work on your property, by law they must be on the Gas Safe Register.

Gas safety in the home and workplace is not something you can compromise. If you don’t have your gas appliances installed repaired or serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer you are risking your life. The Gas Safe Register exists to ensure gas safety for you, your family and your property.

If gas appliances are not installed properly or serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer it can lead to gas leaks that cause fire, explosion and carbon monoxide poisoning. The effects of this can be serious injuries, long term health problems and death.

Not all gas engineers are qualified to do all types of gas work. All Gas Safe registered engineers carry a Gas Safe Register ID card, with their own unique license number, showing the type of work they are qualified to do. Before any gas work is carried out always make sure you ask to see their card and check the front and the back.

Consumers should note that the responsibility for the Gas Safe Register on the Isle of Man will transfer on 1st April from the Department of Local Government and the Environment to the Department of Infrastructure.
