Deeds & Probate Indices
The images below will enable you to establish a deed or probate reference number for records that have not been indexed on Online Services.
Deeds are set out below by parish, both grantor and grantee books being displayed under each parish. In simple terms, in the grantor books you should search by the surname of the person or name of the corporate body that has granted or has given something. For example, the seller (the Grantor) of a property granting title to the purchaser (the Grantee). On the flip side, you can use the grantee books to search by the surname of the person or name of the body corporate that has received or gained (the grantee) title. The downloadable document entitled 'Historic Deeds Indices' provides further information about searching the indices.
The data relating to deeds registered before 1911 is included for completeness. An alternative searchable index (in Excel) format for deeds registered pre-1911 can be found at the Pre-1911 Deeds page. The originals of pre 1911 deeds may be inspected at the Manx Museum. Digital versions of deeds held at Manx Museum may be found on an external website not operated by Isle of Man Government at www.familysearch.org.
Probate indices for the period from 1800 to 1960 are available to view at the bottom of the page. Please note that probate records from 1940 to date are already indexed via on our online service and at the current time records prior to 1940 cannot be added to the system.
Once you have established the reference number of the deed(s) and/or probates you wish to see, first of all please check to see if the information is indexed and available to purchase via Online Services. If it is not, you can e-mail a request to deeds@gov.im quoting the respective deed and/or probate number(s). Once you submit your request, the Registry will upload the requested document as soon as possible and notify you accordingly so that you can purchase it.
