Appointment of Magistrates

  • Do you know what the role of a Magistrate is?
  • Would you be interested in finding out?
  • Do you care about the community in which you and your family live?
  • Would you like to have the opportunity to make a difference and directly affect what is happening in your community?

If you have integrity, are discreet, have an open-mind and can work as part of a team, then the Isle of Man needs you!

Becoming a Magistrate means you can play a vital part in administering local justice.  It is an unpaid voluntary position.  You do not need any formal or academic qualifications, or previous legal training.  You will be given full training before you sit in court; when you sit you will be part of a ‘bench’ of three magistrates, including one who has been trained to act as the chair.  There is always a legally qualified clerk to advise on the law and procedure.

You must be an Isle of Man resident and have been so for at least five years, and be aged between 18 and 70.

You would be required to sit in court, on average, for two days per month.

For further information please contact the court by telephone: +44 1624 685469, or email: zoe.cannell@courts.im
