Cessation of work – notifying the Work Permit Office

Where a permit holder ceases work there is an obligation to notify the Work Permit Office (either by letter or by email) within 14 days. Responsibility for notifying the Office depends upon the type of permit.

The employer’s obligation

When a permit holder ceases to work for an employer the employer is required to notify the Department of the following within 14 days:

(a) the full name of the employee

(b) the work permit number

(c) the date the employee left the employment

(d) to the best of the employer’s knowledge, whether the employee is still working in the Island and the name and address of the new employer. 

However, the employer is not required to provide this information if the holder of an automatic work permit cease employment.

Cessation of self-employment

If the holder of a self-employed permit ceases self-employment, the holder must, notify the Department of the following within 14 days:

(a) his or her full name

(b) the work permit number

(c) the date of cessation

(d) whether he or she is still working in the Island and, if so, the name and address of the employer or details of the new self-employment. 

Automatic permit - cessation of 'primary employment'

Where a person ceases 'primary employment' (see further at automatic permits) and his or her spouse, civil partner or cohabiting partner has an automatic permit the person in primary employment must notify this fact to the Department, within 14 days of the date of cessation.

Automatic permit - cessation of employment

Within 14 days of ceasing work for an employer, the holder of an automatic permit must notify the Department of the following information –

(a) his or her full name

(b) the permit number

(c) the name of the employer (if any)

(d) the date of cessation.
