Vetting and safer recruitment

The Isle of Man Vetting Bureau was established in June 2012 in order to enable Island organisations to access the Criminal Records Bureau.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is an Executive Agency of the UK Home Office. The DBS helps employers to make safer recruitment decisions, particularly when assessing the suitability of candidates who will work with children and/or vulnerable adults.

Because of legislative constraints, it was not previously possible for organisations within the Isle of Man to use the services provided by DBS. Due to the extension of Part V of the Police Act 1997, this is now possible.

Formalising arrangements with the DBS means the Island has access to the UK Independent Safeguarding Authority barred information, which is only available through a DBS issued enhanced DBS Certificate. This move also means that procedures for obtaining criminal record checks is now unified and that the same standards apply throughout England and Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Crown Dependency jurisdictions.

Many Island-based employers will not be able to register directly with the DBS but can apply to become a Registered Organisation. The Isle of Man Vetting Bureau is the Registered Body that acts as the link between local organisations wishing to request criminal records checks and the DBS. All applications to the Isle of Man Vetting Bureau must be accompanied by:

• DBS application form (available from Department of Home Affairs)
• Isle of Man Vetting Bureau Declaration form (which must be signed by both nominated identity checker and the applicant), and
• Payment, if applicable.

Companies and/or Organisations that have attended the DBS training course and have signed and returned their 'agreement' with the Vetting Bureau can request DBS Forms below. Please complete all details to ensure prompt delivery of your request.

Do not send any documents direct to DBS.
