What is a Public Appointment

A public appointment is the appointment of a lay member to a Statutory Board or Body such as an Authority, Commission or Committee.

A lay member is a representative of the general public (ie not a Member of Tynwald), who does not necessarily have specialised or professional knowledge of a subject but may offer a useful external view and impartial perspective.

The statutory boards or bodies which a lay member will be appointed to, all have a role in the functioning of the Isle of Man Government, despite not being Government Departments. They provide independent advice and/or deliver some aspect of public service and play an important role in shaping and influencing policy and decision-making locally.

Who can apply

A lay member must be at least 18 years old. Some appointments require specialist knowledge and expertise, but many do not.

It is essential that lay members are selected from a range of backgrounds and interests and we actively encourage applicants who can bring talent and fresh perspectives to the services we benefit from.

Whatever your interests, background and experience there is an opportunity for you to get involved but you must be prepared to give your time, skills, knowledge, and commitment.

Public bodies are most effective when they reflect society's diversity of views.
