Child passports

Eligibility for an Isle of Man variant of the British Passport

• British citizen / subject living in the Isle of Man or
• British citizen born in the Isle of Man but resident in the UK or
• Naturalised/Registered in the Isle of Man but resident in the UK or
• Naturalised/Registered in the UK and living in the Isle of Man.

You need to submit:

• Correctly completed Application form
• 2 x passport photographs – must meet the criteria set out in the Guidance Notes
• A countersignatory is required
• Correct Fee
• Original full birth or adoption certificate
• If the name has changed since birth we will require the original certificate to state how it has been changed (i.e. marriage certificate, deedpoll)
• Any other passport(s) relating to you – if you hold a foreign passport (i.e. you hold dual citizenship) you must submit the foreign passport with the application

• To be signed by a parent/guardian with Parental Responsibility

You need to submit:

• The previous passport
• Any other passport relating to the applicant – if you hold a foreign passport (ie. you hold dual citizenship) you must submit the foreign passport with the application
• If the child is 12 or over they must sign in Section 7
• To be signed by a parent/guardian with Parental Responsibility

Please note:

• The passport can be renewed at any stage. You do not need to wait for it to expire. You should however check that your passport has sufficient validity remaining to be accepted at your destination.
• The passport number will change when you renew the passport

You must submit:

• Correctly completed Application form
• 2 x passport photographs – must meet the criteria set out in the Guidance Notes
• A countersignatory – if under 11 or not easily recognisable from the previous passport
• Correct Fee
• The previous passport
• Any other passport relating to the applicant – if you hold a foreign passport (ie. you hold dual citizenship) you must submit the foreign passport with the application
• In addition please supply proof of name change – supporting documentation table
• If the child is 12 or over they must sign in Section 7
• To be signed by a parent/guardian with Parental Responsibility
• Evidence that all persons with parental responsibility have consented to the name change, or a court order directing the change.

If replacing a damaged Passport you need to submit:

• Correctly completed Application form
• 2 x passport photographs– must meet the criteria set out in the Guidance Notes
• Your previous passport – even if badly damaged it must be submitted
• A countersignatory is required
• Correct Fee

If replacing a lost or stolen passport you need to submit:

• Correctly completed Application form
• 2 x passport photographs (must meet the criteria set out in the Guidance Notes)
• A countersignatory is required
• Correct Fee
• Completed Lost & Stolen Notification – Form LS01 (this must be signed by the parent who signed the last application form)

If your passport has been lost or stolen abroad:

You should report all passport losses or thefts to the local police in the country you are in as soon as possible. You will need the crime reference details they provide for the lost or stolen notification Form LS01.

You should report the theft or loss to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Embassy, Consulate or High Commission of the country you are in. When you make a report to the FCO, they will give you a Form LS01 to complete and sign.

The FCO will record the loss or theft of your passport and forward the information to Her Majesty’s Passport Office who will then cancel your passport to reduce the risk of someone else using your identity.

Please note that if your passport is lost and handed to the Police or into our office they will not be able to return it to you and it will be destroyed.

All mothers, whether married or unmarried, automatically have parental responsibility for any child born to them. However, prior to 1 November 2013 an unmarried father did not automatically gain parental responsibility for a child, even if they were registered as the father on the child's birth certificate. The Children and Young Persons (Amendment) Act 2013 made an amendment to the Children and Young Persons Act 2001 that from 1 November 2013 an unmarried father would automatically gain parental responsibility by jointly registering the child's birth with the child's mother.

For a child born on or after 1 November 2013:

1. All mothers, whether married or unmarried, automatically acquire parental responsibility for any child born to them
   
   
2. Fathers, whether married or unmarried, automatically acquire parental responsibility by jointly registering the child's birth with the child's mother and the father’s name appears on the birth certificate.

For a child born before the 1 November 2013:

1. If a child's parents are married, both parents have parental responsibility and either parent can sign section 8, so long as their name appears on the birth certificate.
   
   
2. If a child's parents are divorced but were either married at the time of the child's birth or subsequently married following the child's birth, both parents have parental responsibility and either parent can sign section 8, so long as their name appears on the birth certificate. Unless this has been amended by a court order.
   
   
3. Unmarried parents:

• Mothers automatically have parental responsibility for any child born to them
  
  
• Unmarried fathers did not automatically gain parental responsibility even if he was registered as the child's father. Parental responsibility could have been acquired with a parental responsibility agreement or court order. This must be submitted with the passport application.

Please note: If you are applying for your child's first passport, the Isle of Man passport service must see evidence of parental responsibility if the father has signed the application form.

If a court has made an order regarding parental responsibility or ordering restrictions on the issuance of a passport, this must be submitted with the passport application.

If another adult is acting as a parent, we will need proof of this. If the child is in care or is living with foster parents, we may need permission from the local authority before we can issue a passport to the child.

All applications made from outside of the United Kingdom, Isle of Man or Channel Islands must be made through the UK Government.
