First British Passport

You can apply for your first adult passport if you have not previously held a British/Isle of Man Variant passport (including a child passport 0 -15 years).

 British Passport Eligibility

To be eligible for a British passport you must be:

  • Living in the Isle of Man or
  • Born in the Isle of Man or
  • Born in the UK and living in the Isle of Man or
  • Naturalised / Registered in the Isle of Man or
  • Naturalised / Registered in the UK and living in the Isle of Man

You need to submit:

  • Application form
  • 2 x passport photographs – Ideally to be taken by a professional photographer
  • A countersignature
  • Correct Fee
  • Original birth certificate
  • Further documents – If your name has changed since birth we require the original certificate to state how it has been changed.  (i.e. Marriage, deed poll)
  • You will need to attend a First Passport Interview

Important information: A birth certificate is not considered absolute proof of identity.

Supporting documentation

In addition to the application form, there are other supporting documents required that you will need to produce.


If you were born or adopted in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man before 1983, we need to see your birth or adoption certificate.

If you were born in UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man on or after 1 January 1983, we need to see your full birth or adoption certificate showing your parents' details and one of the following:

  • Your mother's UK birth certificate, certificate of registration or naturalisation, or her passport that was valid at the time of your birth or
  • Your father's UK birth certificate, certificate of registration or naturalisation, or his passport that was valid at the time of your birth and your parents' marriage certificate

We may ask for further documents relating to your parents.

If you were born outside the UK and have a certificate of naturalisation or registration, we need to see your naturalisation or registration certificate

If you were born outside the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man on or after 1 January 1983, and one of your parents were born, registered or naturalised in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man, we need to see your full birth certificate showing your parents' details and one of the following:

  • Your mother's birth certificate, certificate of registration or naturalisation or
  • Your father's birth certificate, certificate of registration or naturalisation, and your parents' marriage certificate

We may ask for further documents relating to your parents.

If you were born before 1983 and your father was born in the UK

We need to see:

  • Your full birth certificate showing your parents' details and
  • Your father's birth certificate and
  • Your parents' marriage certificate

If you were born before 1983 you cannot claim British nationality automatically through your mother. However, you may be able to apply for registration as a British citizen. If you would like for further details please contact our office.
