Efforts to keep children safe when they are taking part in cycling proficiency training have received a boost thanks to an Island company.

Tower Insurance has provided 240 new high-visibility tabards for young cyclists to wear while participating in sessions to improve their riding skills and highway knowledge.

The sponsorship has also funded the purchase of eight replacement signs, which are displayed to alert other road users when cycle training is in progress.

Each year between March and October more than 800 primary school children in the Island attend the cycling proficiency scheme delivered by the Isle of Man Constabulary’s Road Safety Team.

John McDonough, Road Safety Supervisor, said:

‘Cycle proficiency plays an important role in a child’s development, often marking the transition from pavement dweller to road user. The support provided by Tower Insurance is very welcome and will ensure that children can continue to learn in a safe environment.’

The new tabards and signs were presented at Ballacottier Primary School by Richard Hulme, Business Development Manager at Tower Insurance, and Island Games mountain bike gold medallist Nick Corlett who is the recipient of the 2017 Tower Insurance Scholarship.

Mr Hulme said:

‘Tower Insurance takes its social responsibilities very seriously and funds a range of community and sporting initiatives in the Island. The tabards and signs will raise awareness of cycling proficiency training and encourage motorists to drive considerately in areas where sessions are taking place.’
