Department of Infrastructure response to Blackpool Airport closure

Wednesday, 8 October 2014

With the announcement from Blackpool Airport yesterday that no buyer has been found to purchase the Airport and that it will cease commercial operations with effect from 15 October, the Department of Infrastructure is working with Citywing and its aircraft operator to help identify an alternative option for the Isle of Man/Blackpool flights.

Just over a week ago, Citywing was informed that if no buyer could be found by 7 October, the Airport would close on Wednesday 15 October.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne MHK, said:

‘This is very sad news. Blackpool Airport is an airport steeped in aviation history, with long ties with the Isle of Man. It will obviously be very difficult for Blackpool Airport staff, passengers and operators.’

He added:

‘The Isle of Man/Blackpool route has averaged around 40,000 passengers in 2012 and 2013 combined and this will be a blow to those who regularly use the reliable, convenient and low fare service. The Department is in close communication with senior staff at Citywing, who were given very little notice of these events and who are working hard to find an alternative solution. I sincerely hope that Citywing’s ongoing discussions with Blackpool Airport prove worthwhile or alternatively that a solution involving a nearby airfield can be found.’
