British Citizen, EEA national or EEA family member

British Citizens

If you are a British citizen you do not require any clearance from the Immigration Office to live in the Isle of Man, but you may require a work permit issued under the Isle of Man Control of Employment Act if you want to work or take up self-employment in the Island.

EEA Nationals

If you are an EEA national, providing you are not excluded on grounds of public policy, public health or public security, you do not require any clearance from the Immigration Office to live in the Isle of Man, but you may require a work permit issued under the Isle of Man Control of Employment Act if you want to work or take up self-employment in the Island.

EEA Nationals are expected to be able to support themselves without assistance from public funds.

EEA Family members

Under Isle of Man law EEA and Swiss Nationals can enter and live in the Isle of Man to exercise EU treaty rights. A non-EEA National family member can also join their EEA National sponsor who is exercising EU treaty rights.

A family permit is a type of entry clearance issued to direct and extended family members of an EEA National, who is in, or intends to come to the Isle of Man to exercise free movement rights.

Direct and extended family members of an EEA National may apply for a family permit and this is currently £65.

For more information about the rights of the EEA citizens and their families to come to live and work in the Isle of Man please refer to the Isle of Man Immigration Rules and the Immigration (European Economic Area) Regulations 2009 as amended.

Do British Citizens and EEA Nationals require a work permit?

Although British Citizens and EEA Nationals are free of immigration control in the Isle of Man, a work permit may be required under the Isle of Man Control of Employment Act where there is a requirement to work or take up self-employment in the Island.

Work permits are issued by the Department of Economic Development.
