Highway drainage and flooding

Highways drain

A pipe which only drains the highway is the responsibility of the Department of Infrastructure. If you wish to report a problem telephone +44 1624 686665.

Surface and foul water drains

Pipes which carry foul or surface water from a property to the public sewer is the responsibility of the property owner.

Foul sewers

Foul sewers are the responsibility of the Drainage Authority. Douglas, Onchan, Ramsey, Peel, Port Erin, Port St Mary and Castletown are all responsible for their own areas. Please report problems to the Authority concerned. All other areas are the responsibility of the Department of Transport, Drainage Division. Telephone +44 1624 693501.

Blocked gullies

Within the Borough of Douglas, contact the Corporation Cleansing Department. Telephone +44 1624 675286. All other areas contact Highways Maintenance Telephone +44 1624 686665.

Note: Owners, occupiers and tenants have a responsibility for the maintenance of ditches, culverts and land drains on their property. It is an offence to allow soil, debris or water to flow uncontrolled onto the highway.

Land Drainage

Certain main rivers are the responsibility of the Department's Drainage Division. For further information and general river flooding complaints please contact the Land Drainage Engineer of the Drainage Division on telephone +44 1624 686672.
