European Union (Iraq Sanctions) Order 2018 and Iraq Sanctions Regulations 2018

Thursday, 26 July 2018

This news release is issued in respect of the restrictive measures directed against Iraq.

The European Union (Iraq Sanctions) Order 2018 and Iraq Sanctions Regulations 2018 came into operation on 25 July 2018.

The Island already has measures in place with regard to Iraq, given effect in the Island by means of the Iraq (United Nations Sanctions) (Isle of Man) Order 2000 and the Iraq (United Nations Sanctions) (Isle of Man) Order 2003, which are UK Statutory Instruments. However, it is now considered important to apply Council Regulation (EC) No 1210/2003  to the Island, to ensure the Government’s policy of keeping sanctions legislation in line with that of the United Kingdom is maintained.

The EC Regulation provides for the imposition of various restrictive measures, including asset freezes against the previous Government of Iraq and those person and entities connected with Saddam Hussein, prohibitions on the import, export or dealing in Iraqi cultural property etc. which have been illegally removed from Iraq, and on the participation in activities to circumvent these prohibitions.

A revised edition of Sanctions Notice 10 will be published shortly.
