New Factsheet being issued by the Customs and Excise Division to Businesses involved in International Trade

Tuesday, 18 April 2017

The Customs and Excise Division of the Treasury has published a new Factsheet which provides helpful guidance to businesses involved in international trade on UN and EU sanctions, and export and trade control licensing matters.

The new Factsheet 200 MAN “What does my business have to do with UN/EU sanctions, and export and trade controls” is available on the Customs and Excise website.

The Factsheet is intended for those who buy and/or sell goods and services overseas.  It is intended to raise the awareness of businesses to the various requirements, prohibitions and restrictions that may be involved, and provide guidance on where to find information and assistance.

Starting in April 2017, businesses selected for VAT and certain other visits from officers of the Division will be asked three simple questions to establish if they are aware of sanctions and export and trade control matters, and where to find information to assist in any checks or screening they might need to undertake, as well as if they know where to report any concerns or suspicions.  Businesses identified as being involved in any way in international trade will be issued with a copy of the Factsheet.

In due course, it is intended that new applications for VAT registration identified as being involved in international trade (or intending or likely to be) would be issued with the Factsheet, together with VAT-registered businesses registered to submit Supplementary Declarations or EC Sales Lists in respect of their trade with EU Member States.

More information on sanctions, export controls and trade control licensing can be found on the Customs and Excise website.
