Call for Sites

This is an archived page – for the current status of the Area Plan for the East please see www.gov.im/tape

The Isle of Man Strategic Plan 2016 - came into effect on the 1 April 2016 following its approval at March Tynwald. Whilst the Strategic Plan contains general policies for the Island as a whole, it is the role of the Area Plans to identify site specific proposals and address planning policy matters at the local level.

Initial work has now commenced on the Area Plan for the East and the Cabinet Office – the Department responsible for Planning Policy - is making a ‘Call for Sites’ for land within:

  • the Borough of Douglas
  • the District of Onchan
  • the Parishes of Braddan, Garff (Laxey and Lonan Wards only), Marown and Santon

The Department now invites developers, landowners, local authorities, government Departments, Statutory Boards and others to identify any sites which they wish the Department to consider allocating for a particular purpose in the new Area Plan. Several documents are now available to download from this page, including:

  • the Public Notice for the Call for Sites
  • the Call for Sites Response Form (available to complete online or to download)
  • an Explanatory Note about the process
  • the draft Site Assessment Framework for the East
  • maps showing the geographical scope of the plan, the areas covered by existing Local Plans and the draft Settlement Boundaries for the East

In order for the Cabinet Office to log and consider any suggested sites more effectively, submissions should be made using the Response Form. Ideally, Response Forms should be completed:

  1. Online via the online survey (now closed)

For the avoidance of doubt, it should be noted that this Call for Sites does not comprise the ‘Preliminary Publicity’ stage as set out in Schedule 1, Paragraph 2 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1999. Further announcements will be made in due course about the remaining stages in the development plan procedure which will include:

  • Preliminary Publicity - which will give publicity to the matters which the proposals in the Area Plan should deal with
  • Publication of the Draft Plan - which will include public consultation
  • A Public Inquiry
  • Adoption of the Plan by the Cabinet Office
  • Approval of the Plan by Tynwald

If you have any questions about the Call for Sites or wider plan-making process, please contact the Policy Team by emailing planningpolicy@gov.im
