Display to highlight Port Erin regeneration plans

Monday, 25 March 2013

An important regeneration project for Port Erin is moving a step closer, with plans to improve Port Erin Railway Station currently on public display.

The scheme is intended to make the railway station the main gateway for people arriving in the Port by public transport. The South West Regeneration Committee is keen to give the public an opportunity to see the exciting plans and give further feedback on the proposals before a planning application is submitted. The plans are available to view now at Port Erin Railway Station and the exhibition will remain in place over the Easter weekend.

The Committee realised early on that the railway station offers the potential to create a much better facility for visitors and residents alike. Improvements to the railway forecourt will help to provide a new public transport hub and an enhanced community space in the centre of Port Erin. The outside area will be improved to create a more welcoming building whilst inside, facilities will be brought up to date.

Phil Gawne MHK, Chairman of the South West Regeneration Committee commented:

‘Improving the railway station in Port Erin will create a better first impression for visitors to the Port. The station is located opposite the retail area on one of the busiest routes into the centre of the village. After receiving extensive public feedback on this project, the South West Regeneration Committee is keen to make the most of this important facility so that it supports our local businesses and the excellent tourism opportunities Port Erin has to offer. At the same time, the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure is looking to improve the internal facilities of the railway station and deliver a more efficient, customer friendly public transport system. This is just one of the projects being brought forward by the Committee aimed at improving the central areas of Port St Mary and Port Erin.’

The South West Regeneration Committee includes the three Rushen MHKs as well as representatives of Port Erin and Port St Mary Commissioners and representatives from Port St Mary Business Association and Port Erin Traders.
