The Department of Economic Development (DED), in partnership with the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (DEFA), has mapped out mountain bike routes and recreational activities in three of the Island’s forests via new signage.

The new signs, fitted at the entrances to Archallagan, Conrhenny Community Woodland and South Barrule Forest, feature leisure opportunities, dedicated mountain bike trails and points of interest for visitors.

Rob Callister MHK, Political Member at DED with responsibility for Tourism, said:

‘The new signage showcases the increasing array of activities and mountain bike trails in our Island’s forests. It’s encouraging to see more people taking to the outdoors and enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery of the Isle of Man. We will continue to work closely with DEFA to preserve and enhance our forests for locals and visitors alike.’

David Cretney MLC, Political Member at DEFA with responsibility for Forestry, commented:

‘The ongoing project to develop these sites would not have been possible without dedicated local volunteer groups and organisations who have worked hard building trails, improving the pathways and carrying our conservation projects. In the Programme for Government, we pledge to increase use of our natural environment for health, wellbeing and enjoyment. The development of the new trails and activities are a real move towards this goal.’

Archallagan has child-friendly blue and green graded mountain bike trails, a play park and spider maze for families. The forest also features miles of red to black graded trails for experienced riders.

Conrhenny is becoming a popular destination for mountain biking, hosting the annual 24 hour endurance event, Longest Day Longest Ride. The forest also features a Trees for Life planting area and flat terrain for dog walkers and runners.

South Barrule is a growing hub of outdoor adventure with the addition of a new mountain bike skills area this year. More experienced riders can explore South Barrule and its interlinking routes to Corlea and Cringle forests.
