NSC pools to close for a day as flood protection work continues

Tuesday, 24 October 2017

The swimming pools at the National Sports Centre (NSC) will be closed to the public for a day on Wednesday 1 November as work continues to protect the building from flooding.

The NSC’s indoor and outdoor facilities were badly damaged when heavy rain hit the Island in December 2015.

Although the pool hall was relatively unscathed, flood water entered it, leading to a large-scale clean-up operation.

Waterproof doors, gates and barriers are being installed at the pool hall as part of ongoing work to protect the facilities.

The use of heavy plant will be required on 1 November to lift doors weighing 2.5 tonnes each.

Graham Cregeen MHK, Minister for Education and Children, said:

‘While we regret any disruption to NSC users, it’s important we carry out the installation safely and could not do this if the public were to use the pools at that time.

‘We hope that after the one-day pools’ closure, the rest of the work at the NSC will be finished early in November and will ensure the building can better withstand flooding.’
