Community-spirited volunteers sought to join Parole Committee

Thursday, 17 May 2018

The Parole Committee is looking for volunteers to support its work as a key part of the Island’s criminal justice system.

Community-spirited individuals who are interested in becoming involved in this rewarding aspect of Manx life are being invited to apply to the Department of Home Affairs.

While appointed by the Department, the Parole Committee is an independent body responsible for making recommendations to the Home Affairs Minister on the release and recall of prisoners.

When prisoners are released on licence, the committee may make recommendations regarding the conditions applied to such licenses, the variation or cancellation of conditions and any other related matter.

The position requires a significant time commitment, particularly in preparing for meetings. Although the role is that of a volunteer, committee members receive attendance allowances and travel expenses.

Home Affairs Minister Bill Malarkey MHK said:

‘The Parole Committee performs an important role in the life of the Island and its justice system, holding great responsibility in assessing whether individuals are suitable to be released into the community and the conditions of that release.

‘No formal qualifications are needed in applying – the core attributes required are common sense, good judgement and a commitment to the strong values held dear in our community.’

Parole Committee Chair Clare Faulds said:

‘The committee welcomes people from all walks of life and with good life experience to apply for the vacant positions.

‘The work is challenging, of course, but it is also extremely rewarding and supports a system that makes a real difference not only to the people directly affected but also their families and wider society.’

An application pack and more information about the Committee can be found on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Alternatively contact Scott Wilson in the Department of Home Affairs for information by calling +44 1624 694306 or emailing scott.wilson@gov.im

Applications should be submitted to the Department by 5pm on Friday 1 June.
