Other housing for the elderly

Ballacurn House Trust

The Trust administers 32 properties. They are for older persons, but are not sheltered (no warden). Applicants to the Trust have to be state retirement age or over, and will be expected to have around 10 years residence on the Island, though there may be some flexibility. Allocation is based on immediate need and limited resources. Therefore, property owners will not be given priority over those with more limited means. Rental charges are generally in line with public sector rents.

The 32 properties are spread over four sites in Ballaugh, Port Erin, Douglas & Onchan. These comprise of:-

  • 18 bungalows at Ballacobb Close, which is approximately half a mile South of Ballaugh Bridge on the main road. The bungalows have one bedroom, bathroom, kitchen/lounge area and have gas central heating. The bedrooms are a reasonable size and most of the bungalows are suitable for couples. There is one two-bedroom bungalow.

  • 8 bungalows in Meadow View, just off School Road in Onchan. The site contains a community building where Age Concern run a Day Centre for Older People. The bungalows have a single bedroom, lounge, separate kitchen and bathroom and there is communal oil central heating.

  • 4 flats at 6 Clarke Street, Douglas, which is situated between Tynwald Street and Peveril Street in Douglas. Two of the flats are on the ground floor and there are stairs up to the two flats on the first floor. Each flat consists of a single bedroom, bathroom, kitchen/lounge area and there is communal central heating.

  • 2 semi-detached bungalows in Ballafesson situated approximately one mile outside Port Erin; they are on a bus route. The bungalows are larger than the other trust properties and are suitable for couples. They have a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, lounge and another room which could be used either as a bedroom, study or dining room.

Cannan Court

The Department has nomination rights to a number of units at Cannan Court in Kirk Michael. The Department holds a waiting list in respect of these units, which is made up of people who meet the criteria for sheltered housing. Those persons wishing to join the list need, in the first place, to be accepted onto a waiting list for a sheltered housing authority, or a general waiting list as long as they are of retirement age. Allocation of the units is prioritised to those with some connection with Kirk Michael.
