Yellow Fever

Yellow fever is a viral disease that is transmitted by several species of mosquito. It is caused by the yellow fever virus, which belongs to the Flaviviridae family. It is endemic in tropical regions of Africa and South America where the World Health Organization estimates approximately 200,000 cases occur each year, with 30,000 deaths.

The Yellow Fever Vaccine is available from one of the Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres shown below.

Please contact the practice direct to arrange an appointment.

The responsibility for Designation of Registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres (YFVC) in the Isle of Man is with the Public Health Directorate on behalf of Manx Care. This is in-line with the International Health Regulations 2005.

Your GP practice may not be a designated YFVC, so although they may provide all your other travel advice and any vaccinations you require, they won’t be able to administer Yellow Fever Vaccination.

In general, please remember to arrange your travel health requirements well in advance of any travel as more than one vaccine or one dose maybe required for your trip.

There are four registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres on the Isle of Man and you are welcome to contact any of them to discuss Yellow Fever Vaccinations.

Changes To Yellow Fever Certification 11 July 2016

On 11 July 2016, changes to International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) regarding the validity of the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) for Yellow fever vaccine came into force.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) as of 11 July 2016:

The period of validity of the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) has changed from 10 years to the duration of the life of the person vaccinated. This applies to all ICVP for yellow fever vaccination, including certificates already issued, and new or duplicate certificates.

A valid ICVP, presented by arriving travellers, cannot be rejected on the grounds that more than ten years have passed since the date vaccination became effective as stated on the certificate;and that boosters or revaccination cannot be required.

World Health Organisation (WHO) and NaTHNaC provide useful information about the changes and advice on how to complete the ICVP from 11th July, 2016 onwards.
