Urgent and emergency off-island transfers - information for family & carers

Being involved in a medical emergency or serious accident can change a person’s life drastically. It can be difficult for both a patient, their family and carers.

If your loved one has been involved in a medical emergency and needs to be transferred off-Island, and you have unanswered questions or need someone to talk to, we are here to help you (as well as the patient), starting from the initial emergency contact. Below, you can find information about the journey off-Island, including details about the visiting hospital, the journey back home to the Isle of Man and your loved one’s recovery.

Supporting information will soon be available in hard copy form (information leaflet), and via a QR code which will be available on posters throughout the Emergency Department, in all of the Ambulances, GP Practices, Wellbeing Centres and the foyer of Noble’s Hospital.

This page will help you with:

  • general information about the hospital your loved one is being transferred to, including visiting times, a map, directions and travel times

  • contact details to arrange overnight accommodation and provide information on nearby hotel/bed and breakfast facilities. You should speak to the Air Ambulance Coordinator regarding authorisation for a contribution towards accommodation expenses you may incur. Accommodation contributions are at the discretion of the Air Ambulance Coordinator and should not be assumed as authorised. You may choose to stay at any available accommodation provider and you should book your accommodation directly with the provider and retain full copies of receipts; this pack aims to offer advice on nearest locations depending upon the Hospital the patient has been transferred to. Some of the providers listed may offer special rates

  • shops, food and refreshments available on site at the visiting hospital

  • contact details of the Patient Advice and Liaison Service at the visiting hospital

  • contact details for our Manx Care Advice and Liaison Service on Island, including emergency out of hours coordinator details to help with travel

  • travel claim queries if you have already paid for travel

  • transport options

  • contact details of the hospital reception area your loved one has been transferred to

  • contact details of people and teams who can help you with general queries or issues whilst you are off-Island

This information has been co-designed by staff and patients/families who have recently used our emergency pathway service to be treated at a UK Hospital. We know this is a difficult and stressful time, and we are here to help.

Further support

Further support is available from the charity 'Arlo's Adventure', which works to support Manx residents who require treatment in hospital in the United Kingdom, and their family members. They may be able to help meet the costs of transport and accommodation for family members to visit during a patient's stay in hospital, where they are not funded by any other body or organisation. They may also cover the costs of family members participating in leisure activities whilst in the United Kingdom.

The charity also supports bereaved families by raising awareness of the effects of the loss of a child or a pregnancy. They support the family as a whole, but with a focus on the siblings of the lost child, and on providing emotional and practical support to families.

Returning Home

Returning home can be a daunting experience when a loved one has been transferred off-Island under emergency or urgent circumstances; this page aims to provide as much information as possible in order to make your and your loved one’s journey back home as comfortable and worry free as possible.

The patient’s discharge procedure will be coordinated by the treating Hospital and the referring Department i.e. Air Ambulance (AA) and all travel requirements will be based on the clinical need of the patient.

Being transferred off-Island via an emergency service does not necessarily mean that transfer home will also be via these services; in most circumstances arrangements will be made for the patient to travel home via scheduled services by air or sea.

If you were authorised as a funded escort to travel to the UK with the patient, your journey home will also be arranged and funded by the Department.

If you are self-funding, you will be required to make your own arrangements to travel back to the Island, however you should speak to the Isle of Man professional arranging the patient’s journey regarding any special rates that may be available to you.

You should also speak to the Isle of Man professional regarding onward travel to your home address, as transport on-Island may only be arranged in a limited number of circumstances.

It should be noted that travel home is arranged in order to ensure the patient returns home in the safest manner. If you have any concerns regarding the journey home, you should contact the Isle of Man professional arranging discharge/travel.

The patient should have received a discharge summary upon leaving the treating Hospital and you should refer to any instructions provided on this summary in regards to patient self-care and/or further treatment once they have returned home. If you or the patient are unsure in any way, you can contact the treating Hospital directly or via the following pathways:

  • The patient’s local GP surgery
  • Manx Care Advice & Liaison Service (MCALS)

Telephone: 01624 642642(open 9.30am to 4pm  Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays and weekends)
