Wheelchairs and Specialist Seating Service

Yes

• Individual has permanent disability or medical condition which seriously affects their ability to walk
  
  
• Required for permanent use; normally longer than 6 months. (In certain cases shorter periods will be considered; terminal and palliative care or short term rehab with therapist defined and time specified goals)
  
  
• Wheelchair required for regular use, regular taken to mean to be used 3 times a week or more
  
  
• Individuals who are unable to walk or self-propel a manual wheelchair may be eligible for a power wheelchair assessment to determine suitability
  
  
• The home environment is suitable for wheelchair use
  
  

No

• Individual who are able to walk but for various reasons refuse to do so. (However, consideration will be given where refusal to walk is supported by a comprehensive clinical assessment)
  
  
• Standard transit or self-propel wheelchairs are not provided to individuals living in care homes
  
  
• Mobility scooters or any other powered wheelchair are not provided for outdoor use only
  
  
• Attendant controlled power mobility, either in the form of an attendant controlled power wheelchair or add on power units are not provided
  
  
• Rain covers, sunshades or comfort items are not provided unless supported by a comprehensive clinical assessment
  
  

Riser/Recliner

Inclusions

Patient must meet 3 of the following:

• Difficulties with independent or assisted standing transfer
  
  
• Difficulty with maintaining upright posture
  
  
• Presenting with existing or developing contractures
  
  
• Difficulty adjusting own seated position and has Waterlow or Glamorgan (Paediatric scale) score of 10+ (please refer to Manx Care Pressure Ulcer Policy – April 2022)
  
  
• In need of a specialist seating solution for at least 4 days a week

Exclusions

• Adaptive equipment can meet seating need
  
  
• Existing furniture is unsuitable
  
  
• To accommodate a desire for leg elevation (excludes those under care of lymphedema team)
  
  
• Patient chooses or prefers to sleep in a chair
  
  
• The service user is resident in a care home*. (See standards of quality safety)
  
  
• If provided with specialist wheelchair to support postural management
  
  

Specialist Seating

Inclusions

Patient must meet 3 of the following:

• Limited mobility, requiring equipment to facilitate transfers
  
  
• Significant difficulty maintaining postural alignment, including high risk of slipping and falling out of chair
  
  
• Presenting with existing or developing contractures, impacting upon seated position
  
  
• Inability to relieve pressure areas and has Waterlow or Glamorgan (Paediatric scale) score of 15+ (please refer to Manx Care Pressure Ulcer Policy – April 2022)
  
  
• Risk of isolation due to complexity of transfers
  
  
• In need of a complex seating solution for at least 4 days a week

Exclusions

• Patient and/or carer needs to be able to adjust position of the chair as per care plan
