Our Island Plan

Outpatient musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy

MSK physiotherapy is open to all Isle of Man residents with a registered GP.

We help with a range of short and long term problems including back and neck pain, sciatica, soft tissue injuries, sprains, strains, joint and muscular pain.

Our experienced Chartered Physiotherapists provide a wide range of treatments including advice, support and individual rehabilitation/exercise plans for people with MSK conditions. We ensure that you receive the most effective evidence-based treatments for your problem.

We also aim to help people manage their problem longer term and have links with the local leisure centres for patients to continue their rehabilitation following discharge from our service.

Self-referral

We are excited to introduce our self-referral service once again.

This is a direct route to physiotherapy without the need to see your GP or any other health care provider first. This is available for adults only (age 16 and above).

Can I self-refer

This referral option is not available to under 16s or for neurological, paediatric, respiratory, obstetric or gynaecological problems, or if you are still under the care of a consultant for this problem. Replacement splints, aids and supports cannot be supplied.

How will I benefit

Patient satisfaction surveys have shown that patients benefit from self-referral in the following ways:

  • It is a direct route to advice and intervention when it is most needed
  • Early intervention can speed up healing and recovery
  • It supports the individual in developing skills in self care and self management.
  • It gives people a simplified route in and out of services
  • It promotes health focused behaviour

Alternatively, paper self-referral forms are available at the Central Community Health Centre (CHC) Physiotherapy reception in Douglas or collected from your GP practice or can be downloaded directly from this page.

Specific conditions

Our self-help resources below can be a great starting point to help you manage your pain and symptoms. These links offer quick, evidence-based advice to manage pain and support recovery. Most injuries just need time to heal and these resources can help you manage that process safely, whilst allowing your body time to recover or whilst you are waiting for your Physiotherapy appointment.
