Registered Dietitians (RDs) are the only qualified health professionals that assess, diagnose and treat diet and nutrition problems at an individual and wider public health level. Uniquely, Dietitians use the most up to date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease, which they translate into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices. The title Dietitian can only be used by those appropriately trained professionals who have registered with the Health Care Professions Council and whose details are on the HCPC's website.
Our department accepts referrals from all healthcare professionals and self referral for adults experiencing clinically significant unexplained weight loss (look at our self referral tool below). We only accept referrals from medical doctors and specialist nurses for specialist conditions such as inflammatory bowel conditions, diabetes, liver problems and for children under the age of 16.
Our team is made up of Dietitians, Nutrition Nurses, a Dietetic Support Worker and our administration team. Between us, we cover all the wards at Nobles Hospital, Mannanan court and Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital, as well as providing care to Mental Health, Diabetes, Renal and Cancer services. We hold a number of outpatient clinics for adults each week at various locations. The Paediatric Dietetic clinics are held in Women’s and Children's Outpatient Department. We can offer home visits in certain circumstances and provide a service to all care and residential homes island wide.
Unexpected weight loss in adults
If you have experienced unexpected or unplanned weight loss and would like some help with this complete the malnutrition screening tool (MUST) calculator found on the BAPEN website.
If you score 2 or above please contact your GP or local healthcare provider to complete a referral to the dietitian. You may find the Food first leaflet in the downloadable documents section of this webpage helpful.
Dietetic clinics
Clinics are run at multiple locations including Ramsey District Cottage Hospital, and locations in the south of the Island. Specialised Clinical areas such as Renal Conditions, Diabetes, Paediatrics and Gastroenterology are run from Nobles Hospital.
The service is unavailable during weekends and bank holidays, outside of these hours please contact your GP or MEDS if needed or leave a message on our answer machine and we will endeavour to return your call within 1-2 working days.
Weight management
Manx Care does not currently have a weight management service, therefore we cannot accept referrals for weight management. There is lots of information and resources on improving your lifestyle and losing weight. Your GP or Practice Nurse could also refer you to the Healthy 4 Life Scheme on Island if you are keen to increase your activity levels.
