Event aims to match volunteers with the right opportunity

Wednesday, 14 February 2018

An event designed to match volunteers with charities and voluntary groups looking for support will take place this month.

A recruitment fair will mark the start of Volunteers’ Week (24 February - 3 March) and take place in the Garden Room at the Sefton Hotel in Douglas on Saturday 24 February, 10am to 2pm.

Organiser Alison Lester said:

‘Volunteers’ Week celebrates the valuable contribution volunteers make to island life. We are extremely lucky in the Isle of Man that so many people want to give their time freely for the benefit of others. This event is a way of helping our community and thanking volunteers for the work they do.

‘Charities, projects, shops, services, churches, hospitals, hospices and individuals are constantly striving to recruit volunteers, and the purpose behind organising these events is to match the right person with the right opportunity.’

Organisations wishing to book a space at the Volunteers’ Week launch event, which is free and will be attended by Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney and the Mayor of Douglas Councillor Debbie Pitts, should email alison.lester@hospice.org.im

Minister for Health and Social Care David Ashford MHK said:

‘Volunteers play an important role in the Manx community, whether providing support and company for fellow residents or raising funds for worthy local causes. At DHSC we are very grateful for the support our hospitals receive from dedicated teams of volunteers, and recognise the role volunteers play in the wider public sector.'

He added:

‘Volunteering can be very rewarding and gives people the opportunity to learn new skills and make friends. The recruitment fair is a wonderful event which brings charities and organisations together for a common aim, while offering potential helpers an abundance of choice and information.’

Groups and charities will organise their own events to recognise and thank volunteers during the week, which runs until 3 March.
