People in the Isle of Man will be able to use gyms and indoor sports facilities from Monday, including many at the National Sports Centre, but swimming pools remain closed.

The move comes as the Isle of Man becomes the first place in the British Isles to end social distancing rules after nearly four weeks without a new case of COVID-19.

From Monday, people will be able to attend gyms for some indoor classes, such as yoga and Pilates, but not high intensity workouts, such as boxercise and spin classes. Spaces will be limited in this stage, so people are advised to book in advance and follow guidelines whilst working out. Personal trainers will also be allowed to operate within gyms or private facilities.

Swimming pools and spa facilities must remain closed until a further review on 18 June.

Changes to outdoor sports will also come into effect and allow a group of up to 30 people to play contact sports and share equipment - competitions and fixtures are also now allowed.

Dr Alex Allinson MHK, Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, said:

‘Due to the efforts of our community to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the chance to end social distancing is a fantastic day for the Isle of Man. Physical health boosts wellbeing and the return of indoor facilities, including many at the NSC, and outdoor team sports is excellent news for the people of our Island.’

From Monday, customers at the NSC will be able to return to using the gym, squash courts and indoor bowls hall, but the sports halls will remain closed. These areas have been vital in helping the Isle of Man Government with the storage of essential supplies of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) throughout the COVID pandemic.

Returning customers will also be able to take part in a range of indoor and outdoor fitness classes and popular walk and talk sessions will restart on 22 June.
