Volunteering at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital

Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital runs a volunteering scheme within the hospital. With over 20 volunteers, the scheme provides services from serving refreshments to inpatients on the ward to a friendly smile.

Helping hands

We recognise the valuable work that volunteers do and are keen to recruit more volunteers to a variety of roles.

Volunteers

Anyone over the age of 18 and with some time to spare can volunteer. A wide variety of people, from all walks of life volunteer. There is no need for any specific skills, someone with patience and a smile is always appreciated.

Many of our volunteers or their loved ones have been hospitalised in RDCH. It is because of this they choose to repay the hospital for the care it provided and to give back some of their free time. By helping others, volunteering is a rewarding experience that can be incredibly fulfilling. As a volunteer you will complement the work of health professionals and other paid staff

Any time you can give will be valuable and worthwhile, it is for each volunteer to decide what amount will be easy to fit in with their current commitments.

Role of volunteers

Volunteers serve tea and coffee in the mornings and afternoons to ward patients 7 days a week. During their shift the volunteer may also prepare cutlery for meal times or simply sit with patients and provide them with company. Patients also have access to a library trolley, and books, games and activities are distributed by our volunteers. However, volunteers do not provide medical or nursing care.

We are always keen to hear from people with more ideas about how their prior skills and interests could benefit patients, including those with a keen interest in crafts to quizzes and hairdressing.

What we do for a volunteer

Each skill and experience you bring with you to the role will be valued. We will provide you with an identity badge (and protective clothing if required). We will give you any training you need to be successful in the role and welcome you as a member of the ward team.
