Urology

Urology is a surgical specialty which deals with diseases of the urinary and genital tracts in adults and children of both sexes. This includes conditions affecting the kidneys and bladder in both sexes, and the prostate gland and the genitals (penis, scrotum and testicles) in men as well as male infertility and problems with erections.

Although urologists are surgeons who specialise in treating urological conditions, many of these conditions can be treated without the need to undergo an operation. If surgery is necessary, it can often be performed endoscopically (key hole surgery) with only a short stay in hospital.

Conditions we see

• Kidney conditions including stones, infections, and tumours (benign and cancer).
• Bladder conditions including cystitis, urine infections, incontinence of urine, bladder stones, bladder pain, blood in the urine and bladder cancer.
• Prostate problems in men including trouble passing urine, benign prostate enlargement, prostatitis, blood in the semen, abnormal PSA blood test results and prostate cancer.
• Male infertility and problems with erections and ejaculation.
• Male urogenital conditions including problems with the penis, testicles, and scrotum.
• Children’s urological problems including tight or inflamed foreskin of the penis, undescended or missing testicles, hydroceles (fluid around the testicle) and groin hernia.
